Summary: Stuff that I do as a PGG Editor
Jello again y'all, and Greetings from the Mothership!
I thought it'd be a good idea to inform you what I do as an editor here at the
PGG Mothership. It's sort-of a "day in the life of an article" so to speak.
Actually, the articles themselves don't really speak much; that's just an
expression, so let's carry on.
----------
1) A young, up-and-coming author sends a PGG article to me via email. My
preferred email address is swbaker@vela.acs.oakland.edu, but if articles are
sent to yIlImQo@aol.com or bakers@rh.wl.com I'll end up finding them anyway.
2) I send a message back to the author, stating something like "blah blah,
thanks for the article, blah blah blah, I'll edit it for format and stuff,
blah blah, you'll get it back soon for author confirmation, blah blah, give me
all your money, etc etc."
This message is the author's "reciept" that I received the article submission.
If you don't get one of these, then I didn't get your article!
3) I transfer the article from the Mothership to one of my machines, and log
the name of the article and the date I received it in a general ledger book
I've been using.
(This general ledger book has nine columns in it, and each article I receive
gets logged in it. I basically track all sorts of dates, so when an author
writes and gripes about such-and-so, I can just look in the ledger and see
when anything was done. At least that's the theory.)
4) When I sit down to edit a batch of articles, I note in the next column of
the ledger the date that I edited it, then the date that I spell-check it.
Yep, two separate columns to make sure I run the speller on 'em!
5) I then send the article back to the author for "author confirmation." I
log the date that I sent the article in the general ledger book.
6) When I hear back from the author, I log the date of confirmation in the
ledger.
7) I then add the approved article into the article archives, and, you guessed
it, I log the date that it was added, as well as the name of the archive.
8) Finally, I put the article on the Mothership and post it to
alt.galactic-guide. The post date is logged in the final column of the ledger.
----------
Seems like a lot of bookwork, but you'd be surprised how much the dates have
helped me to "cover my ass" so to speak (and no, my ass doesn't really speak
either; it's another one of those expressions, and my why have my posts been
so silly lately?).
That's what I do as far as editing articles is concerned. Any questions?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? <Grin>
